What Classifies an object as a shoe?

A shoe is one or more materials which combine and interplay with one another to surround all or part of the foot to serve one or more of the following purposes:

  1. Functionality
    1. Cushioning
    2. Comfort
    3. Style
    4. Protection
      1. Trauma
      2. Medicinal
        • Hygienic (prevent spread)
        • Orthopaedic
    5. Stability
  2. Symbolism
    • Memorial
    • Representative of belief or attitude eg. religion, rights
    • Self Expression
  3. Psychosocial
    • Status
    • Branding
    • Collecting

Shoes have always been the bi-product of a human movement, attitude or belief. Their construction and design has always been affected in some way by the current social and economic influences.

A shoe is always in the eye of the beholder. As an aspiring footwear designer, how far we can push the envelop of this definition? I feel as though challenging the perceived definition of a shoe will definitely stand out as something new, something different and something exciting.
